Facts about the Surgery:
Otoplasty, also called (bat ear surgery) is the surgery that treats the prominent or large ears, it’s a common cosmetic procedure with high success rates. Protruding or prominent ears cause embarrassment and self-consciousness to many young children or adults who suffer from this problem. This procedure is designed to modify the shape of the ear, its location, and its harmony with the face. Prominent ear surgery can be performed on any age group after the age of five. This is because the ear almost reaches adult size at the age of five, and the cartilage before that age is too soft to hold stitches.
This operation is usually performed under general anesthesia, and the surgeon reshapes the cartilage, reduces or enlarges it according to need, through hidden incisions behind the ear. The surgical sutures used are usually absorbable (dissolvable) and do not need to be removed later.
The ears are wrapped with padded bandages upon completion of the surgery that will be removed the next day. The pain after the operation (if any) is very minimal and can be controlled with simple painkillers. The patient must wear a special compression headband covering the ears for two weeks after the operation. During the first week after otoplasty, or until the surgeon advises otherwise, it is imperative to sleep on the back exclusively. Sleeping on your side can lead to discomfort, more swelling, and potentially compromise the quality of the surgical outcome. Also avoid wearing tight “pull-over the head” clothing in the first week after the operation.
