Facts about the Surgery:
Having excessively large breasts may cause a lot of discomfort for women, as it gives the woman an appearance that suggests she is overweight. This condition may be present since the beginning of breast formation during adolescence, or it may be acquired as a result of hormonal changes that occur during repeated pregnancies or due to weight gain. Excessive breast size not only affects the aesthetic aspect of the body’s shape, but can also exacerbate and increase the symptoms of some health problems, such as a herniated disc. It also hinders many daily practices, such as sports, for many women.
The goal of breast reduction plastic surgery is to reduce the size of the breast while reshaping it. The nipple is repositioned upward and, if necessary, reduced in size. Excess skin and breast tissue are eliminated from the lower and outer parts of the breast. An advanced discussion between the doctor and patient is imperative to make a decision about the proposed breast size to be obtained after the operation.
Three incisions are usually made in the breast reduction procedure. The first is around the nipple, and it usually heals smoothly. The second incision is a longitudinal incision from the nipple to the bottom of the breast, and the third incision is a transverse line in the infra-mammary fold. The breast tissue is sculpted and a portion of the tissue and skin is removed to achieve the desired size and shape. Absorbable (dissolvable) sutures are used, so they do not need to be removed after the operation.
It is normal for changes to occur in the size and shape of the breast years after the operation, but fortunately it will not return to its original size because a large part of the breast tissue has been removed, and as a natural result of removing part of the breast tissue, the risk of breast cancer is reduced by 28% after this procedure according to some studies.
As for breastfeeding, most women can breastfeed after this operation, although there is a small percentage of women who may experience decremental milk production after the operation.
The patient may feel a mild degree of pain but it can be controlled using painkillers. Patient must refrain from exercising or any strenuous activities and sleeping on her stomach during the first month after the operation. The patient is required to wear a compression garment for 3 weeks. The final result of breast reduction surgery appears after 3 months.
