Facts about the Surgery:
One of the most popular cosmetic surgeries is rhinoplasty, AKA nose job surgery, due to its significant effect on restoring the harmony of facial features and enhancing its beauty. The motivation behind performing this procedure may be to improve the appearance of the nose, treating breathing problems, or both. The upper part of the nasal structure is made of bone, while the lower part is cartilage. Rhinoplasty can reshape and restructure bone, cartilage, skin, or all three.
Rhinoplasty can correct many aspects of the nose such as reducing the size, width, or length of the nose, changing the size of the nostrils flare, reshaping the tip of the nose (e.g. bulbous nose tip), correcting the angle between the nose and the upper lip, eliminating the nasal hump, and straightening of the crooked nose. Most of these problems are naturally present but some appear due to accidents or external traumatic events to the nose. The procedure can be performed for all age groups over 16 years, including teenagers and the elderly.
There are two main types of surgical rhinoplasty: open rhinoplasty, which involves a small incision between the nostrils at the columella, and closed rhinoplasty, which has incisions inside the nostril without any external wound. Dr. Tarek chooses which type should be performed according to the patient’s need and condition. It is worth mentioning that open rhinoplasty allows for a greater and meticulously more accurate fine details control leading to a better cosmetic outcome. In any case, the external wound will almost completely disappear within a few months after the operation.
From a plastic surgery point of view, noses can be divided into two main types: bony or fleshy noses, and the main factor that distinguishes them apart is the skin thickness. In a fleshy nose, the skin is thick, while it is usually thinner in a bony nose. But this does not apply to all cases, as a bony nose can have thick skin sometimes.
Although rhinoplasty may seem like a simple procedure, the global rate of people needing a revision and reconstruction of rhinoplasty is 5-15%. That’s because the surgery requires a great deal of experience and high precision. Therefore, you must carefully choose a highly experienced plastic surgeon to avoid undergoing the same operation twice. As for Dr. Tarek Copty’s patients, the percentage of them needing to have revision or any touches after 1 year of their surgery is less than 1%.
Regarding the reconstruction of the nose from previous operations, the surgeon may need to take cartilage either from the ear or from the right lower rib to rebuild the nose again, as in many cases, unfortunately, when the operation is performed by a non-expert plastic surgeon, the structure of the nose is completely destroyed and needs to be rebuilt again.
Generally speaking, since it takes a full year for patients to see the final results of their rhinoplasty, pre-mature revision must be avoided, patients must wait at least 1 year after the initial surgery.
Before surgery, a medical history along with a careful examination is conducted in order to evaluate your general health. We will discuss with you the way your nose can look in relation to your other facial features. Pre-operative instructions may include the elimination of certain drugs for example aspirin and other blood thinners, in order to minimize the possibility of excessive bleeding.
Rhinoplasty is usually performed under general anesthesia. First, the skin of the nose is separated from the underlying skeleton of bone and cartilage. The bone and cartilage are then reshaped and the skin is re-draped over the surface. One of the most important benefits of getting a rhinoplasty, is that Dr. Tarek Copty does not only resolve aesthetic issues, but functional ones as well. Deviated septum, turbinate hypertrophy, and other functional problems can be corrected during a rhinoplasty, most of the incisions of a nose job are placed inside the nose, except for one small external incision that is made between the nostrils. In cases where the nostrils flare, Dr. Copty may also need to make an incision at the junction between the nose and the skin of the upper lip to narrow the flared appearance. It is not unusual to combine rhinoplasty with chin augmentation to improve the profile of the patient.
Dr. Tarek doesn’t use nasal packing after nose job surgery at all, because he adopts the latest cutting-edge technologies to prevent any bleeding. After the operation, an external cast is placed to protect the nose for only one week. Pain is minimal and controlled with medications. Bruising and swelling may appear around the eyes, but they begin to fade within a few days. Most people resume their daily activities one week after the operation, but during the first month, they must refrain from exercising as well as any activity that can apply pressure on the nose, such as wearing heavy glasses or sleeping on the face. Some patients may feel some numbness at the tip of the nose, this will resolve completely within a maximum period of 3 months. In terms of results, patients will be able to see 60-70% of the final result immediately after removing the cast. The final result appears after a full year.
