Facts about the Surgery:
Liposuction is a surgical procedure that is designed to reshape and contour different body areas by removing the undesired and stubborn fat deposits. Liposuction shouldn’t be considered as a weight loss alternative, in fact, the perfect candidates for this surgery are patients who are relatively close to their ideal weight but have accumulations of fat at certain localized areas. Since the procedure removes fat only and doesn’t remove the overlying skin, it’s important that the patients have satisfactory overlying skin tension and tone. Liposuction is performed by using high suction attached to special probes which are passed through tiny punctures made in inconspicuous places around the body, fat cells are suctioned out, allowing the surgeon to shape or contour various parts of the body.
Liposuction surgery can be performed on many body parts. It has been proven particularly effective in the double chin, tummy, waist, love handles, bra fat (bra bulge), arms and thighs. As more experience is gained, more areas of the body are becoming suitable for liposuction surgery. Sometimes, more than one area can be liposuctioned at the same time (e.g. the 360 liposuction to contour the lower torso) For men, liposuction can be used to correct gynecomastia (enlarged breasts).
High-definition liposuction (liposculpture) is a term that describes suctioning the fluid with a great deal of precision, allowing the surgeons to get very well-defined lines (e.g. enhancing the appearance of 6-packs abs, female silhouette lines, …etc.). As a plastic surgeon, Dr. Tarek Copty is well-known for using the latest advances and best technologies in high definition liposculpture, so in addition to the Microaire technology, one of the most important technologies being introduced is ultrasound energy (the VASER), which helps in skin tightening alongside fat removal. More recent technologies involve the subdermal coagulation by Helium activated radiofrequency (AKA J Plasma) allow skin tightening while at the same time performing liposuction. These technologies can’t replace lifting surgeries, especially when there is excessive skin laxity with the presence of stretch marks in the area. In those cases, the only solution is lifting surgeries.
Liposuction surgeries can be done alone or as a part of lifting surgeries (e.g. thigh lift, mommy makeover, …etc.). In some cases, in order to enhance the well sculpted and contoured appearance of the body, liposuction can be combined with BBL surgery, in which the suctioned fat is reinjected in the buttock to improve its curvature and shape.
Depending on the treated area, liposuction can be performed under partial or general (full) anesthesia. Up to 6 liters of fat can be suctioned in general but this depends on the case. After the operation, some of the puncture sites may be left open so that excess fluid and blood can drain from the body. Usually, a one-day hospital stay is recommended. In some cases, the amount of fat that is suctioned is very small (e.g. double chin area). The procedure can be performed inside the clinic under local anesthesia while the patient is awake.
Post operatively, patient must wear compression garment for the first 2-3 weeks after surgery, patient must refrain from exercising for the first month but patients can must start light walking the same day of the surgery, bruises and swelling can occur and usually fade out within the first 10 days. The final results of liposuction appear after 2-3 months.
